— About Me —

Miriam Gutierrez

I grew up in a small town called Porterville, CA, located at the gateway of the Sequoia National Forest, surrounded by orange groves and cattle ranches in every direction. I currently live in Salt Lake City, UT, in the midst of the Wasatch mountains and just a few hours away from the desert. I can’t recall where the nickname “Merm” came from but some how it stuck with me. My work reflects on the natural world that surrounds us and how I view and connect with it. Being out in nature helps me shut out the noise from day to day life. Whether I’m out in the mountains enjoying a hike, taking a walk around the neighborhood, or sitting quietly by a stream, I feel captivated as I am surrounded by natural beauty every where. I try to capture the fine details in it all. Inspiration can be found anywhere if you simply take the time to be present and observe your surroundings. Through studying nature, I am pushed to understand myself more along with the human connection to the natural world. While it can sometimes be frightening to be this vulnerable artistically, it can be even more so not to be. The intention with my artwork is to tell my story and share my experiences. I want the viewer to feel as if they are experiencing my work as they would in reality-to awaken memories and spark up familiar sensations, even if it’s just for a moment. Thank you for being here and taking the time to appreciate all that I have created.
